The oppref value from the ChatGPT ad click is read from the landing page URL and stored in a first-party cookie, then passed to forms, checkout and your CRM.
One event ID is generated in the web container and reused on the server, so pixel and Conversions API events match.
Email, phone, name and customer ID are normalised and SHA-256 hashed before being sent as user data.
Your data layer events are mapped to OpenAI standard events like lead_created, appointment_scheduled, checkout_started and order_created.
Order and deal values are sent with the correct currency code, in USD, CAD or AUD.
CRM stages such as qualified lead and deal won are sent as custom events through webhooks, n8n, Zapier or server GTM.

The OpenAI Conversions API is a server-to-server way to send conversion events, such as leads, bookings and orders, to OpenAI Ads. It works alongside the OpenAI Pixel so ChatGPT Ads can measure conversions more completely.
Using both is the most reliable setup. The pixel captures the ad click and browser events, the Conversions API sends the same events from your server, and a shared event ID makes sure each conversion is counted once.
I use a server-side Google Tag Manager container hosted on Stape or Google Cloud. The OpenAI Pixel tag runs in web GTM, and the OpenAI Conversions API tag in server GTM sends events with the click ID, event ID and hashed customer data.
When someone clicks a ChatGPT ad, OpenAI adds a click ID called oppref to the landing page URL. I store it in a first-party cookie and send it with each conversion, together with hashed email or phone, so OpenAI can attribute the result.
