What is Shopify server-side tracking?
Shopify server-side tracking sends your store’s events and orders to ad platforms from a server you control, usually a server Google Tag Manager container on your own subdomain, instead of relying only on pixels in the shopper’s browser. Fewer purchases are lost to ad blockers, iOS limits and checkout problems.
Is server-side tracking worth it for a Shopify store?
For most Shopify stores spending regularly on Meta, Google or TikTok ads, yes. Ad platforms optimise on the purchases they receive, so recovering missed orders and improving match quality usually helps bidding. Use the free tracking loss calculator to estimate the impact for your spend.
How does server-side tracking work with the Shopify checkout?
Shopify’s checkout runs in a sandbox, so I use a custom pixel with the Customer Events API to send checkout events to server GTM, and the orders/create webhook to confirm every paid order with its value and customer data.
Does it replace the Shopify Facebook and Google apps?
It can replace or work alongside them. Often the cleanest setup turns off duplicate app pixels and sends one deduplicated stream from server GTM. I review your apps first and recommend what to keep.
Will Shopify server-side tracking improve my Event Match Quality?
Usually yes. Hashed email, phone, name and address from the order, plus external ID and first-party fbp and fbc cookies, give Meta much more to match on.
Stape or Google Cloud for Shopify?
Stape is the best fit for most Shopify stores: quick to set up, affordable and built for server GTM, with a Shopify app and webhooks support. Google Cloud Run suits very high traffic. I am an official Stape partner and set up both.
Can you track Klaviyo server-side from Shopify?
Yes. Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Started Checkout and Placed Order events can be sent to Klaviyo server-side, so abandoned cart and post-purchase flows trigger more accurately.
Does it work with Shopify Plus and Shopify Markets?
Yes. I set up Shopify Plus and multi-market stores with the right currencies, consent rules and hosting regions for each market.
How long does a Shopify server-side setup take?
Most setups take one to two weeks depending on the number of platforms. After launch, ad platforms usually need about a week to process the new data. I do not promise a fixed ROAS change, because it depends on your ads, offer and market.
Is Shopify server-side tracking GDPR compliant?
It can be when set up correctly. I connect the Shopify Customer Privacy API and your consent app to Consent Mode v2 and every server tag, hash personal data and choose EU hosting where needed.
Do I own the server container and data?
Yes. The GTM containers, Stape or Google Cloud account and all data are yours, with documentation and a walkthrough at handover.
Are there free tools to check my Shopify tracking?
Yes. You can use the free Shopify store checker, server-side tracking checker, Meta Pixel checker and 96 free ad calculators, including the tracking loss and server-side ROI calculators.
