How to get the file: in Google Tag Manager open Admin > Export Container, choose a version or workspace, and click Export. You get one .json file.

Your container file is analysed in your browser and is never uploaded. The example is a fictional container with deliberate mistakes. Only if you ask for the report by email is the finished Excel file sent to our server.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What Does the GTM Container Analyzer Check?

Everything that can be read from a container export, turned into a list you can act on.

Full Inventory

Every tag, trigger and variable with its type, folder and settings, in plain names instead of GTM’s short codes.

Dead and Duplicate Tags

Tags with no trigger, paused tags, old Universal Analytics tags and tags that send the same thing twice.

Unused Triggers and Variables

Triggers no tag uses, and variables that nothing refers to.

Google Ads Setup

A missing Conversion Linker, and conversion tags that fire on every page.

GA4 Setup

Several Google tags for one ID, event names that break GA4’s rules, and a purchase tag with no ecommerce data.

Consent

Marketing pixels with no consent check, and consent tags that do not use the Consent Initialization trigger.

Custom HTML

Which pixels hide inside Custom HTML tags, and code that still uses document.write.

Naming and Folders

The naming pattern most of your items follow, how many follow it, and the outliers.

How Does the GTM Container Analyzer Work?

Three steps. No login and no access to your GTM account.

01

Export the container

In Google Tag Manager go to Admin > Export Container, pick a version or workspace and download the JSON file.

02

Drop the file here

Your browser reads the file and runs the checks. The file is not uploaded.

03

Fix and document

Work through the issues, then download the Excel report as documentation for your team or client.

Why Analyze a GTM Container?

A Google Tag Manager container grows for years. Agencies change, campaigns end, tools are replaced, and almost nothing gets deleted. The result is a container nobody fully understands: tags that fire twice, tags that never fire, and pixels that ignore your cookie banner. This GTM container analyzer reads the export file and shows what is inside in a few seconds.

What is a GTM container export?

It is a single JSON file that describes a container: its tags, triggers, variables, folders and templates. You create it in Google Tag Manager under Admin > Export Container. It holds the setup, not your visitor data. It does include the IDs and any code you placed in Custom HTML tags, so treat it like any other project file.

The problems it looks for

  • Old Universal Analytics tags. Universal Analytics stopped processing data in July 2023. Any tag still sending to it does nothing useful.
  • Duplicate tags. Two tags with the same settings on the same trigger send every event twice and double your conversions.
  • Unused triggers and variables. They add weight and make the right item harder to find.
  • Google Ads gaps. No Conversion Linker, or a conversion tag that fires on All Pages and counts every page view as a sale.
  • Consent gaps. Google’s own tags check consent themselves. Other pixels do not, so they need a consent setting or a trigger that waits for consent.
  • Naming. A clear pattern such as “GA4 - Event - purchase” lets anyone understand the container. The tool measures how consistently yours is used.

A container document you can hand over

The Excel report has six sheets: Summary, Issues, Tags, Triggers, Variables and Naming. Each tag is listed with what it is, what fires it, what blocks it and its consent setting. That is the document most teams never write, and it is useful when you hand a container to a client, a new colleague or an agency.

What this tool cannot check

It reads the exported file, not your live website. It cannot tell whether a tag actually fires, whether the values it sends are correct, or whether your dataLayer contains what the variables expect. It cannot see tags installed outside GTM, such as code pasted into your theme or a consent banner loaded directly on the page. An export contains the workspace or version you chose when exporting, which may not be the version that is published. Thresholds such as “many Custom JavaScript variables” are rules of thumb, not Google limits. Use GTM Preview mode to confirm how tags behave on the real site.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the Free GTM Container Analyzer

Is the GTM container analyzer free?

Yes. There is no login and no limit on container size beyond a 30 MB file.

Is my container file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and analysed in your browser. Only if you choose “Email me this report” is the finished Excel report sent to our server so it can be emailed to you.

How do I export a GTM container?

In Google Tag Manager click Admin, then Export Container. Choose the version or workspace you want and click Export. A .json file is downloaded.

Do you need access to my Google Tag Manager account?

No. The tool works only from the export file. Nobody needs to be added to your account.

Can it tell me whether my tags are firing?

No. An export describes the setup, not what happens on the site. Use GTM Preview mode and GA4 DebugView to see tags fire. This tool finds setup problems that are visible in the file.

Does it work with server-side GTM containers?

Yes. It reads server container exports, lists clients, tags, triggers and variables, and skips the checks that only apply to web containers, such as the Conversion Linker.

How does it know a variable is unused?

It searches every tag, trigger, variable, client and transformation in the file for the variable’s name in double curly brackets. If nothing refers to it, it is listed as unused.

What does the naming score mean?

The tool finds the prefix-and-separator pattern most of your names share, such as “GA4 - ”, and reports the share of items that follow it. It does not prefer one convention over another.

Can I use the Excel report as documentation?

Yes. It lists every tag, trigger and variable with type, conditions, usage, consent setting and folder, plus the issues found. Many people use it as a handover document.
