WHAT IT CHECKS

What Does the Broken Link Checker Test?

Every link and image in the page source, plus how the links are written.

Broken Links

Links that return 404 Not Found, 410 Gone or another error.

Dead Links

Links to servers that do not answer at all.

Server Errors

Links that return a 500-range error.

Redirects

Links that redirect, with the address they end up at.

Broken Images

Images that fail to load, and images with no alt text.

Empty and Jump Links

Links that go nowhere, and jump links whose target section does not exist.

Insecure Links

HTTP links on an HTTPS page and new-tab links without rel="noopener".

Where Each Link Is

The page each link was found on and its link text, so it is easy to fix.

How Does the Broken Link Checker Work?

Three steps, usually under a minute.

01

Enter a page

Paste your homepage or a landing page and choose how many extra pages to include.

02

Every link is tested

The tool collects the links and images in the page source and requests each one from our server.

03

Fix from the list

See broken links, redirects and quality issues with the page and link text for each, and download the Excel report.

What Is a Broken Link?

A broken link, or dead link, is a link that leads to a page that no longer exists or a server that does not respond. The visitor sees a 404 error instead of what they wanted. Links break when pages are deleted or renamed, when a URL is mistyped, or when another website removes its content.

Why do broken links matter?

  • Lost visitors: a visitor who hits an error page usually leaves.
  • Wasted ad spend: an ad or email that links to a broken page pays for a click that cannot convert.
  • SEO: search engines follow links to discover pages. Broken internal links waste that effort and stop pages passing value to each other.
  • Trust: errors make a site look neglected.

What do the results mean?

  • Broken: the server answered with an error such as 404 or 410.
  • No response: the server did not answer. The domain may have expired.
  • Server error: the destination has a problem (500 range).
  • Redirects: the link works but passes through a redirect. Fine for external links, worth fixing for internal ones.
  • Blocked the check: the site refuses automated requests. LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram often do. These links are usually fine, so the tool keeps them separate from broken links.

What it does not check

Links are read from the page’s source code. Links that JavaScript adds after the page loads, links behind a login and links inside embedded frames are not checked. One free check covers up to 250 unique links across up to 11 pages. For a full crawl of a large site, use a desktop crawler.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the Free Broken Link Checker

Is the broken link checker free?

Yes. Each check covers up to 250 unique links and 60 images across up to 11 pages, free, with no login.

How does the broken link checker work?

It reads the links and images in your page’s source code and requests each one from our server, then groups the answers into broken, redirects, blocked and working.

Why is a link marked “Blocked the check” and not broken?

Some websites refuse automated requests and return 403, 429 or 999. LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram are common examples. The link usually works for real visitors, so it is kept separate. Open it by hand to confirm.

Does it check my whole website?

It checks the page you enter and, if you choose, up to ten more pages linked from it. For a complete crawl of a large site, use a desktop crawler.

Does it check images?

Yes. It tests up to 60 images in the page source and also flags images with no alt text.

What is a jump link with no target?

A link such as #pricing that should scroll to a section. If no element on the page has that id, clicking it does nothing.

Are redirects bad?

A redirect still works, but each one adds a small delay. For links between your own pages, point straight to the final address.

Why did it miss some links?

Links added by JavaScript after the page loads, links behind a login and links inside embedded frames are not in the page source, so they are not checked.

How do I fix a broken link?

Correct the address if it was mistyped, point it to the page’s new location, or remove it. If your own page was deleted, add a 301 redirect from the old address to the best replacement.
